On December 8, 2009, Health Canada reported that a large amount of shipments of acai berry supplements were tainted with Viagra (sildenafil citrate), an erectile dysfunction drug. For anyone not familiar, Health Canada is the Federal department in charge of protecting and helping Canadians with their health.
Health Canada listed the product names as Anti-Aging Acai Berry, Guarana Blast, Brazillian Pure, Anti-aging Vital Rez V, Weight Loss VitalAcai, Dietary Supplement Acai Power Blast and Muscle Mass. Unless you are trying to “get it up” and get anti-oxidants, please avoid unknown sellers of acai berries.
No adverse reactions have been reported to Health Canada related to the use of the seven acai products, but it appears they are taking proactive steps to avoid any deadly consequences. You may have seen the commercials for Viagra where they state that it should not be used by people using any kind of nitrate drug. Well, the same warning applies here except in this case, people do not know they are taking the drug to begin with. If you are concerned and need more information, you can call Health Canada’s public enquiries telephone line at 613-957-2991, or call toll-free at 1-866-225-0709.
